- There are two tax credit programs that employers could use for qualified new hires. The federal Work Opportunity Tax Credit provides employers as much as $9,000 per new hire — 40 percent of qualified wages for the first year and 50 percent for the second year of employment — as an incentive to hire job seekers identified as Long-term Family Assistance Recipients. The state Employment Incentive Payment (EIP) Program could provide an employer a maximum one year tax credit of up to $2,700 for hiring a qualified cash welfare recipient or vocational rehabilitation referrals.
